US federal student loan rules this calculator follows
Two plans for new borrowers
Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, anyone with a Direct or Parent PLUS loan disbursed on or after July 1, 2026 can choose only the Tiered Standard Plan or the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP). Once you join RAP, you cannot switch back to Tiered Standard.
Tiered Standard Plan
Fixed payments with a term set by your balance when you enter repayment: under $25,000 is 10 years, $25,000-$49,999 is 15 years, $50,000-$99,999 is 20 years, and $100,000 or more is 25 years. No forgiveness, and it does not count toward PSLF.
Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)
Pay 1% to 10% of AGI, minus $50 a month per dependent, with a $10 minimum. Unpaid monthly interest is waived, and the government adds up to $50 of principal reduction so your balance always falls. The remaining balance is forgiven after 360 payments (30 years). Parent PLUS loans are not eligible.
Income-Based Repayment (IBR)
For loans disbursed before July 1, 2026: 10% of discretionary income (AGI minus 150% of the poverty guideline) with forgiveness after 20 years, or 15% and 25 years if you first borrowed before July 1, 2014. The payment never exceeds the 10-year standard amount. The partial financial hardship test was removed.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Full-time government or non-profit employees get the remaining balance forgiven tax-free after 120 qualifying payments (10 years) under RAP, IBR or the 10-year Standard Plan.
Tax on forgiveness
The 2021-2025 federal tax exclusion expired on December 31, 2025. RAP and IBR forgiveness from 2026 counts as taxable income. PSLF and death or disability discharges stay tax-free. State treatment varies.
Disclaimer: This calculator estimates repayment using the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21), 2026-27 Direct Loan interest rates and the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines. It assumes steady income growth, on-time payments and no deferment or forbearance. It does not model PAYE, ICR, Graduated or Extended plans, interest subsidies on subsidized loans under IBR, or spousal debt splitting. RAP and Department of Education rules are still being implemented. Confirm your options at StudentAid.gov or with your loan servicer. This is not financial, tax or legal advice.

Basis: One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21): RAP and Tiered Standard Plan from July 1, 2026, IBR without the partial financial hardship test. 2026-27 Direct Loan rates, 2026 HHS poverty guidelines, PSLF after 120 payments. Forgiveness outside PSLF is taxable from 2026. This is an estimate, not financial or tax advice.
