US payroll rules this calculator follows

Federal income tax withholding

Withholding is estimated from your 2026 Form W-4 using the IRS Publication 15-T annualized percentage method. It applies 2026 brackets of 10% to 37% and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household).

Social Security & Medicare (FICA)

Employees pay 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026 and 1.45% Medicare on all wages. Employers withhold an extra 0.9% Medicare on wages above $200,000 in a calendar year. The employer matches 6.2% and 1.45%.

Pre-tax deductions

Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce income tax but not FICA. Section 125 cafeteria plan items (health premiums, HSA through payroll, FSA) reduce both income tax and FICA. Roth 401(k) is taken after tax.

Overtime (FLSA)

Non-exempt employees must receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour; many states set a higher minimum.

Bonuses (supplemental wages)

Employers may withhold federal tax on bonuses and commissions at a flat 22% (37% above $1 million). Social Security, Medicare and state tax still apply.

State & local taxes

Nine states do not tax wages. Others use flat or graduated rates. Some states (e.g. California, New Jersey, New York, Washington) also take payroll contributions for disability or paid leave, and many cities and counties add a local income tax.

Disclaimer: This calculator estimates paycheck withholding for 2026 using IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 figures, the IRS Publication 15-T percentage method (simplified), the SSA 2026 wage base and estimated 2026 state tax rates. State withholding is estimated from annual state tax and may differ from your state’s withholding tables. Actual paychecks depend on your employer’s payroll system and year-to-date wages. Your final tax is settled on your annual return. This is not tax or legal advice.
