Shariah principles used
- Nisab may be measured by 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of silver.
- Zakat is generally 2.5% of net zakatable wealth after a completed lunar year; 2.5775% is a commonly used equivalent for a full solar year.
- Cash, good receivables, trade inventory and many investments are generally zakatable.
- A primary home, normal personal car, clothing and ordinary personal effects are generally excluded.
- Jewellery, shares, funds, pensions, debt deductions and mixed investments can differ by scholarly method.
- Zakat must reach eligible Shariah recipients; general charitable giving is not automatically Zakat.
UAE practical guidance
- Use current AED market values on the calculation date.
- The calculator does not fetch a live gold or silver price, preventing an outdated nisab.
- Use authorized UAE collection and distribution channels where required or preferred.
- Keep a calculation record showing assets, liabilities, nisab basis and payment date.
- Personal Zakat is a religious obligation and is not the same as UAE VAT or Corporate Tax.
- A business should obtain tax advice before treating any payment as a deductible corporate expense.
Relevant UAE legal framework
| Law / provision | Relevance |
|---|---|
| Federal Law No. 2 of 2024 regarding the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat | Establishes and governs the competent federal authority for Islamic affairs, endowments and Zakat functions. |
| Federal Law No. 4 of 2025 regarding the National Zakat Platform, Articles 1-5 | Defines Zakat and eligible categories, regulates receipt, collection, distribution and disbursement, and establishes a unified national platform and authorization framework. |
| Federal Decree-Law No. 3 of 2021 regarding the Regulation of Donations | Relevant to regulated fundraising and collection channels. A person should distinguish paying personal Zakat from publicly collecting donations or Zakat. |
| Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022 on the Taxation of Corporations and Businesses | Relevant where a taxable business seeks accounting or tax treatment for donations or Zakat payments. Corporate deductibility should be checked separately against current FTA rules and qualifying-recipient conditions. |
